Black Women Build – Baltimore

Overview

Founded in 2017 by Shelley Halstead, this organization is an innovative home ownership initiative that works with Black women to rehabilitate vacant and deteriorated homes while providing support for life-based skills such as financial literacy, counseling, and nutrition all of which promotes social and economic freedom.

Photographs of the brick row homes of North Baltimore created our pallet starting point for the very first (simple) iteration of this site in mid 2017. When it was time to expand the site to a broader audience in late October 2018, we embarked on a very collaborative content strategy process for this young organization. There was a critical timeline, and we produced the site without the luxury of fully defined content and UI/UX planning. Since going live, there has been a great deal of ongoing work to refine and articulate the essential information needed for Black Women Build – Baltimore’s broad user audience, and the work continues. The site we have today strikes a balance between functional utility for engagement/information gathering from interested participants, donors, and volunteers; and a beautiful and deeply informative brochure that covers the basic W’s and can share the broader narrative: mission + need + news + history.
